Naadam: a first-timer’s guide to Mongolia’s summer festival
Naadam is Mongolia’s biggest celebration. The national festival takes place in Ulaanbaatar around 11–13 July, but almost every province and district holds its own smaller Naadam through the summer.
The three games
- Wrestling (bökh): hundreds of wrestlers compete in knockout rounds. There are no weight classes and no time limits.
- Horse racing: child jockeys race half-wild horses across 10–30 km of open steppe.
- Archery: men and women shoot at small leather targets, cheered on by traditional chants.
Big city or countryside?
The Ulaanbaatar opening ceremony is spectacular but crowded and tickets sell fast. A countryside Naadam is smaller, friendlier and often free — and you might be the only foreigner there.
Combining Naadam with fishing
Many anglers watch a local Naadam on the way north, then continue to the rivers. Book transport early: drivers, flights and camps are in high demand during festival week.
