Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake and the Khorgo volcano

Terkhiin Tsagaan (“White Lake”) lies in Arkhangai province, surrounded by extinct volcanoes and old lava flows. It is a natural stop on the route between Kharkhorin and Khuvsgul.

What to do

• Hike to the rim of the Khorgo crater — about 20 minutes from the car park.
• Paddle or swim in the lake on warm afternoons.
• Stay in one of the ger camps along the eastern shore.

Fishing

The lake is known for pike. Casting spoons from rocky points or from a small boat in the evening can be productive. Check permit requirements, as the area is part of a national park.

Nearby

The Chuluut River canyon, a short drive away, is a dramatic basalt gorge and worth a detour.
